7 Ways to Keep Kids Busy While Traveling

7 Ways to Keep Kids Busy on a Trip

Going on vacation can be exciting for the whole family, but the journey from point A to point B can be difficult. No matter how you travel – by vehicle, train, or airplane, you’ll still want to make sure you’re prepared to beat the boredom! We’ve taken several long trips to visit family, both by car and plane, and we’ve picked up a few tricks along the way. Here are some of our favorite ways to keep our kids occupied while we travel!

Creative Supplies

Bring along the basics such as coloring books, crayons, paper, and pens. Your kids will have plenty of time to create and imagine, and this will give them an outlet. To encourage your children to use these supplies, consider buying a new special set of markers, or their own carrying box to carry their supplies in.

Interactive Games

While it’s important for kids to have independent activities to participate in, it’s also a good idea to have group games available. Some easy picks are games such as “eye spy”, the alphabet game, or if you’re traveling by car you can play the license plate game. Last year after our cross-country road trip I shared some of the classic game printable worksheets that I made for my kids – TicTacToe, Hangman, Dots, and more.

Travel Journal

If your kids are old enough to write, give them each a travel journal. You can buy composition books at a local dollar store and let your kids decorate the cover. Each child can write about their vacation highlights, save souvenirs from hotels, attractions, or postcards from each city. Younger kids can also participate by drawing pictures for their entries instead of using words.

Game Consoles

Game consoles have gotten a bad reputation, but long trips are one instance where they can be useful. Buy each child a new game that will keep them occupied for the long trip. Set time limits, and enforce mandatory breaks in order to give their eyes a rest.

Music and Movie Player

Having a device to listen to music or watch a movie on is a great idea for all ages. Before you leave, fill the device with the music or movies of each kid’s choice. If you are going on an airplane, your child’s own headphones can often be used to watch videos on board the plane, instead of buying a pair from the airline.

Digital Camera

Having a digital camera is a great way for kids to enjoy the vacation in their own way. They can take as many photos as their heart desires and add them to their travel journal. It’s always fun to see the trip through their eyes! Make sure the battery is freshly charged, or take extras if the camera uses disposable ones.

Snacks

Snacks are a must-have on any trip. The traveling time will always be more enjoyable with something to munch on. Bring items that store well without refrigeration and don’t make too much of a mess. Items such as veggies and hummus, dried fruit, granola bars, nuts and cheese sticks are great options.

Traveling can be boring, or great fun. It all depends on how well-prepared you are. When you’re traveling with kids, there are many ways to make it more exciting for them. Put these tips to use and enjoy your travels while watching your kids enjoy theirs as well!
