How To Make A Bandana Skirt

My daughter is always asking me for skirts. She loves to dance and twirl in them, so I really wanted to make a full skirt perfect for the shows that she likes to put on for our family. I’ve made tulle tutus in the past, but she tells me that they are itchy so I had to come up with a different idea that was not only inexpensive but also easy!

How To Make A Bandana Skirt

When I saw these bandanas at Walmart, I knew that I had to use them for her skirt. They were $1 each so I grabbed a few and went home to “figure it out.” I had a lot of ideas, but wasn’t able to make any of them actually work. So I went to Joann Crafts and walked around looking for inspiration. In the notions aisle a brochure for how to use elastic caught my eye. On the cover there was a skirt that used wide knit elastic as a waist band. Perfect! I bought a package of red and went home to start working.

Bandana Skirt Supplies

Supplies:

  • Bandanas
  • Knit elastic
  • Sewing basics: machine, pin, thread, scissors

Directions:

How To Make A Bandana Skirt Steps

  1.  Cut a piece of elastic 1 inch wider than the waist band you want to make. Then divide the waist band width by the number of bandanas you want to use. This will determine your bandana width. For example: my waist band was 20 inches, I used 4 bandanas so my bandana width is 5 inches.
  2. Fold opposite corners of a bandana to make a triangle. With the point of the triangle facing you, fold down each side. Take your bandana width from step 1 and make sure the top of your folded bandana is the right width. Pin down the folds.
  3. Take your elastic and overlap the ends by 1/2 inch. Using a zigzag stitch, sew the end down on one side. Turn the elastic over and sew the other end.
  4. Pin the bandana pieces to the elastic and stitch 1/4 inch in. Then stitch again 1/4 in from your first line. When you sew the second line make sure that your folds of the bandana are laying flat.

Here is the skirt in action…

Rainbow Bandana Twirl Skirt

Cute, right? And…easy! I love that I didn’t have to hem one piece of fabric. This took all of 10 minutes to make, it took weeks to come up with…but 10 minutes to make. But now that I have it down I can make many more for her to dance and twirl in all Summer long!

I have one question, do you not sew the sides of the bandanas together? Will her underware not show?

Hello! I did not sew the sides together, she wears leggings underneath. She wanted it to twirl when she danced, so this seemed like the easiest way. Thanks for stopping by! -Monika
