Every once in a while I come across a shop that I instantly fall in love with. I discovered Wire and Honey almost a year ago and every release they have makes me fall more and more in love with them. Their tees for both kids and adults are more than soft and comfy everyday wear. Each item has a powerful message to inspire social awareness and positive change. Read on to find out more about the owner, the shop, and all of their items you will love!
Tell us about yourself: I’m Rah. Well, Sarah but most people call me Rah. I’m mom to Brady, wife to Stephen, and the person behind the online shop Wire and Honey. I enjoy long Golden Girls marathons, reading a good book in bed, and social activism. I’m super shy and awkward which makes it kind of hilarious that I run a brand that is so controversial and emotionally charged. Despite my shyness, I wear my heart on my sleeve and am incredibly passionate about human rights so I absolutely love pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and fighting for what I believe in. I also really love tacos.
Describe your shop & what you sell: We sell tees with a message, particularly focusing on feminism and social change. We try to approach topics that most people wouldn’t expect on children’s items, such as racism, global health, and gender equality and make these complex issues kid friendly. Our hope is that our clothing will help to initiate difficult conversations that most parents avoid. While topics such as poverty and racism may not be issues YOUR child faces, the fact of the matter is that they are issues that countless other children around our country (and the world) face. Empathy and understanding starts young and we are hoping to raise a generation that is more loving, tolerant, and understanding than our own. Our main goal at Wire and Honey is to inspire social change through tiny humans. We love what we do.
What is your favorite item that you make/sell, why? Is it cheating if I say our #kidsforchange line? Our #kidsforchange line is my favorite conversation starting line. It is more simple than most of our designs but also more direct. It focuses on racism, bullying, gender equality, stigma, marriage equality, and inclusion. The main line is a series of tees, hoodies, and hats but we also have a coloring book and children’s books to help reinforce these topics and to give parents a variety of ways to turn simple activities such as reading and coloring into teachable moments. Our hope is that parents aren’t just putting their children into these tees but are taking the time to explain to their children WHY they are wearing them.
How/When did you start your business? We started in December of 2013. Prior to Wire and Honey I was a middle school teacher. I had to go back to work 5 weeks after having my son and I suffered from horrible Post Partum Depression and Post Partum Anxiety. They were dark days and my illness got so bad that I could barely function and was forced to leave my career. Once a combination of therapy and medication helped me even out and become functional again I realized how much I missed the creative outlet of teaching. My husband is the one who encouraged me to start this business as a hobby and we never dreamed it would grow like it has or that we would love it like we do. I fell into this by accident and really feel like I found my calling. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else at this point in my life.
Is there anything else you would like to add? We built our business on a “give back” model so we donate a percentage of all of our monthly sales to a different charity each month. Our charities change monthly and we focus on organizations that help protect human rights. Our dream is to eventually be able to start up our own nonprofit so that we can give back even more.
