The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

With Summer vacation just six weeks away, I’ve been looking for a few good books to read while relaxing at the pool or watching the kids play at the park. There’s nothing better than enjoying the warm sunshine of Summer while reading a good book! I’ve always been an avid reader, as a kid I bring books with me everywhere. I usually read crime thrillers or murder mysteries so when SheSpeaks offered to send a copy of Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale to review I was hesitant. I asked around to a few of my book loving friends and was given so many good reviews about the book that I just had to say Yes.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

The Nightingale
is a historical fiction about two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, and their journey to survive during World War II.  I’ve seen many movies about WWII, heard stories from relative who served but all have been about the soldiers and their experiences. It was very interesting to read a story from the perspective of these two women living in Nazi-occupied France. The sisters couldn’t be more opposite from each other in many ways, as their individual situations were very different. Vianne has a daughter to care for and is forced to take in a German soldier who has requisitioned her home. While Isabelle is young, strong-willed soul who joins the rebellion to try and save France. The story was intense, and the book was a fast paced read. It only took a few days to read because I could not put it down. Kristin Hannah’s storytelling is captivating and you can’t help but turn the pages to find out what happens next.

Here’s what Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train said about The Nightingale

In this epic novel, set in France in World War II, two sisters who live in a small village find themselves estranged when they disagree about the imminent threat of occupation. Separated by principles and temperament, each must find her own way forward as she faces moral questions and life-or-death choices. Haunting, action-packed, and compelling. ― Christina Baker Kline
