Back to School Lunch Ideas

When the school year first starts, my kids love whatever I pack in their lunch. They aren’t picky eaters and I’m pretty good at remembering who likes which foods. But as the months go by, they start to get bored of the same lunch combinations that I pack for them and I need to think of new ideas for lunch time foods.

They have always been snackers, never wanting to eat a “meal” just small portions of bite size food. It always reminds me of the movie Mermaids where the mom doesn’t cook dinner, but instead makes a variety of finger foods and appetizers for the kids to eat. My kids would love eating at that house! For their lunches I try to combine as many options in small portions so that they don’t get bored with their meal. I also like to use cookie cutters for their sandwiches not only for bite size pieces but for fun too!

I like to include at least 1 piece of fruit, along with some carbs for energy and a protein item to fill them up. I also like to include a Wet Ones® Singles pack to make sure that they can easily clean their hands after eating.  But sandwiches are not the only option for a “main course” in a kid’s lunch.

My daughter likes to eat pasta with veggies, separated into small portions of course. Here are a few other non-sandwich options to include in lunches:

  • Turkey, lettuce, and cheese rolled up in a tortilla
  • Rice and bean with corn and salsa
  • Couscous with diced tomatoes, Kalamata olives, and feta cheese
  • Yogurt parfait
  • Hummus and pita chips, or veggies such as cucumbers, bell peppers or carrots
